Why More Couples Are Skipping the Sunset for Something Editorial

Engagement photos have looked pretty similar for a long time. Find a field, wait for golden hour, hold hands, touch foreheads, and get that soft, romantic sunset in the background. There’s nothing wrong with that style. It’s beautiful.

But something has shifted. More and more couples sitting down with me lately aren’t asking for trendy. They’re asking for timeless. They want images that feel like they belong in a magazine spread, not a template… photos that will still feel current, elegant, and unmistakably them in twenty years, not just twenty likes.

That shift is exactly why I created the Editorial Couples Session.

What Is Editorial Couples Photography?

Editorial Couples photography takes inspiration from fashion magazines, celebrity portraits, and modern editorial photography. Think less traditional engagement session and more Vanity Fair-inspired couples portraits.

The focus is on great styling, beautiful light, strong black and white photography, natural chemistry, and portraits that have a little drama to them.

You don’t need to know how to pose or be comfortable in front of a camera. I guide you through the entire photo shoot so you know what to do with your hands, where to look, how to stand, and how to interact with each other.

Some images may feel romantic and intimate. Others may be playful, confident, sophisticated, or sexy. The goal is to create a collection that feels like the two of you, just photographed in a more polished and editorial way.

It Starts With What You Wear

Wardrobe makes a huge difference in editorial couples portraits. Before your session, we’ll talk about what you already own and what will photograph well. I’ll help you choose clothing that works together without making you look overly coordinated. Maybe that’s a beautiful dress and a suit. Maybe it’s jeans, bare feet, and simple white shirts. Maybe it’s something sleek, black, and dramatic. You don’t have to show up knowing exactly what to wear. Styling is part of the process.

You Don’t Have To Know How To Pose

One of the biggest things I hear from couples is, “We’re awkward in photos.” Most people are. You’re not expected to walk into an Editorial Couples photo shoot knowing what to do. I’ll guide you through posing, movement, expressions, and interaction throughout the session. Sometimes I’ll pose you very specifically. Other times I’ll give you something simple to do and photograph what happens between the two of you. That mix gives us polished editorial portraits along with those quieter little moments that feel natural and real.

Engagement Photos Without the Typical Engagement Photo Look

An Editorial Couples Session is a great option if you’re looking for Fargo engagement photography but don’t necessarily want traditional engagement pictures. Your portraits can still be romantic. They can still show your connection. They just have a different feel. Think beautiful black and white portraits, close-ups, movement, dramatic lighting, laughter, quiet moments, and images that could easily be part of a magazine spread. And Editorial Couples photography isn’t only for engaged couples. These sessions are also perfect for anniversaries, date nights, wedding portraits after the wedding, or simply because you want incredible photographs together.

You don’t really need a reason.

Why I Love Black and White Couples Photography

There’s something about black and white couples photography that immediately feels classic. Without a lot of color competing for attention, you notice the expressions, body language, light, and connection between two people. It can also give a photograph that gorgeous editorial quality that feels equally at home in a magazine or framed on a wall. That’s a big part of the look I love creating with my Editorial Couples Sessions.

Inside an Editorial Couples Session

My Editorial Couples Sessions are built differently from a standard engagement shoot from the very first conversation. Before we ever pick up a camera, we talk through:

Concept and mood: are we leaning into soft romance, bold drama, quiet minimalism, or something entirely your own?
Wardrobe styling:  I’ll help you choose pieces (sometimes multiple looks) that photograph with intention and complement each other without looking matchy.
Professional hair & makeup: this service is available for the women who want help polishing their look.
Guided photo shoot:  instead of freezing you into poses, I direct scenes and motion, then capture the real moments that happen inside them.

For the Couple Who Wants Something That Lasts

If you’re the kind of couple who cares more about how your photos will feel in your living room in fifteen years than how they’ll perform in an algorithm this week, an editorial session is worth the conversation. It’s not about being different for its own sake… it’s about choosing craftsmanship and intention over whatever’s currently trending.

Trends will keep cycling. Timeless doesn’t have to.

Curious what an Editorial Couples Session would look like for the two of you? Reach out… let’s talk concept, styling, and your love story.
